About Dr. B.A.M. University:
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University is a state university which was established on 23rd August 1958 as Marathwada University and renamed on 14th January 1994 and received the present name after Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution. University had celebrated its golden jubilee in 2008-09. Total 256 colleges are affiliated to this University. The University campus has 35 departments and covers about 700 acres of area. The University offers degrees, diplomas & certificates in almost all faculties.
It caters the needs of the students of all the religions and cultural backgrounds of 4 rural districts (Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed and Osmanabad) of Marathwada region. University stands as hallmark of higher education and is geared to provide schollastic benefit to each student of the region.
About the Department of Botany:
The Department was established in the year 1962 and was housed in Milind College of Arts and Science, Aurangabad. Subsequently, it was shifted to its present premises in 1967. The Department is active in teaching and research with four specializations viz. Taxonomay of Angiosperms, Cytology and Genetics, Plant Physiology and Plant Pathology.
Infrastructure:
The Department is well equipped with all essential facilities with four professors, four readers and two lecturers. Regarding infrastructure of the Department, it is a three storied building with one seminar hall, one lecture hall, 6 P.G. laboratories, 12 research laboratories, museum, glass house, herbarium and tissue culture laboratory. It is also stipulated with photographic section, library and well maintained Botanic garden.
Botanic garden is well spread in 44 acres area. It is divided into Departmental garden, central oval garden, main botanic garden and Institutional forest. Main Botanic garden has tree section, shrubbery, herbs and climbers section, Research plots, green house, Poly house, compost bins and wells.
Herbarium “BAMU” established in 1969, housing 75,000 specimens including Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms from Maharashtra, India and other countries. It caters the need of Marathwada region.
